Crash

My hard disk crashed. I didn't know Macs did these things. I'm devastated. The Dude at the Service Center said, "Sir, we'll do our best to recover anything we can." But it was written on his face clearly, "Loser, you've lost your music. Now deal with it."

See, if it was just music, I would have dealt with it. Tons of work related stuff was also lost. But, I can find them on office computers and move on with life. But, there were movies also. Lots of them. Diligently downloaded over the years. Lots of stuff off archive.org, and lots of other stuff off torrents.

But again, if it was just music and movies, I'd deal with it. There was photographs also. Trips to Andamans were made last year. Many many pictures were clicked. Hostel was left. Many pictures were taken again. Kerala was paid a visit to. New camera was bought. Many arty pictures were taken. See, this is getting repetitive. That's how many photographs I've lost.

Again, music, movies and photographs one can come to terms with. But I wrote a lot of stuff on random rtf files. Lots of stuff. One-third of two shelved novels - and one was planning to be unshelved.

But again, I was unlikely to have finished any of those novels. There were various recordings of practice sessions, of cousins screeching to background music from GarageBand, and some failed attempts at composing a Love Theme in Ritigowla. Then, there were my playlists - my Kapi playlist, my chai playlist (I'm not kidding - I did have a playlist called 'chai' consisting of old-world Hindi songs to listen to while drinking chai. It is a different matter that I never listened to it while drinking chai), my sad songs playlist, my arbit jazz playlist, my non-arbit jazz playlist, my GNB playlist. Aargh.

Then, there was this most beautiful series of letters I wrote between December and February last year, that was saved only on my mail client. That hurts the most.

ouch. my external HD crashed once - 200 GB of unbacked (and unseen) movies gone.

but yeah, my comp crashed a year or so ago - felt the pinch most over lost personal stuff - writing, communications, pics.

huh. macs crash? heh.

Crashing is quite in fashion ippella: from capitalism to Obama's campaign, they're all at it ...
whom did you write these letters to?

My condolences.

The Chai playlist sounds interesting.

Curious about letters...

If only you had indulged in the joys of sharing the filums and muzaks... :(

My empathy is with you.

BTW will be doing one-half of only movie quiz in KC sometime in Oct or early Nov.

@sita
fingers crossed. optimism is the key. mike is also the key now.

@bobo
yeah, macs crash. this was the most painful way to discover that fact.

@sharan
You really think you could ask me that question, and I'd answer it on this blog? Really?

@a ditty
Be curious. Its not a law schoolite, if you must know.

@priyambad
I informed you about my last visit for exchange. You were Crucibling away... I shall recollect the movies diligently, and then give them to you!

Suhas said...

Well you could look at it as the 'joy of starting over'. But does anyone believe in that?

aandthirtyeights said...

@Suhas
In a jigsaw puzzle, yes. But otherwise, I don't think so!

Sharan said...

heh. that question had a far more significant poin to it, but am too lazy to type it out ...

If this is Ample, B'lore, you should be Very Worried. They suck. It may be better to borrow another Mac and do the data retrieving yourself.

Was it under warranty?

Sreya said...

Macs definitely crash! Mine is proof of that. And they're a bitch to get fixed!

Sita said...

in recent news, mine crashed too. all those movies and musics of yours i had?
gone! all gone!
i do hope mike knows how to fix these things.

aandthirtyeights said...

@Sharan
Okay. Tell me when you meet me.

@varali
Yes, that's a character named Mike. Refer to Sita's comment. I hope he lives up to his reputation as a Mac wizard.

And it was, thank god, under warranty. Bought in mid-October. So, it was a little close. But within that one year period.

@sreya
Yes. They are a bitch to get fixed. But they're so wonderful when they're working!

@sita
Aiyo. Fingers crossed...

[hugs] I hope you recover as much as you can. This must really hurt. Last year, I lost a lot of music and movies. All of it gone. Poof! :(

Can we all cheer you up by sending you music or something?

now that you have scared me like this, i will have to go buy another external hird drive so that i have two copies of everything.

@neha
Hey, thanks! Too much excitement otherwise in life to worry about the hard disk, really.

The stuff will be re-collected. Slowly, but surely. For now, there's my iPod connected to the speakers, through which GNB sings away.

@s
Back up, back up. Better safe than sorry.
