En-gag-ed!

A poem by my Amma.
***
While you were sleeping,
We got you engaged
To the girl of your dreams!

We drove in, flew in,
Met and mingled,
And sealed your secret affair,
With an official consent!

No girl, no boy,
So who’s engaged?
Of course we are
As families engaged:
Between small talks and snacks,
slokams and kolams ,
priests and photographers,
chanting and clicking.

Your parents and hers,
Exchanged gifts and hearts,
while you both slept,
Like kids and dreamt!
All aunts and uncles
And cousins and friends,
Grand parents, "both sides"
Blessed your future
With love and yellow rice!

And when you wake up,
And see what we did,
Frozen in photos,
Our smiles say it all,
Half a world away,
Bridged by best wishes,
Tell us how you feel,
Engaged to this gorgeous,
Girl of your dreams!
***

My cousin got engaged last Monday. In a not-so-uncommon occurrence, the engagement happened in Bangalore while the boy and girl were both in the US. It was 3 A.M. in the US when it happened, and my writerly Amma wrote this poem for him as a present. I'm sharing it without her permission. Sorry, Amma. But some things need to be shared with the world.

I didn't. Although I did attend the concert at your house on Saturday. And it was super-lovely.
